Switchfoot has protesters outside of their concerts lately? wut?
I mean they may be on a pedestal and worshiped by fans, but it’s all mostly on tumblr??? like FW doesn’t have anything controversial in it too? well there are the small jabs at Christian Mysticism in their lyrics, but it’s been there since Legend of Chin.
First of all, I’m fairly certain the protesters are protesting rock and roll in general (if they are following the same vein as the Oklahoma protesters). They’re not specifically targeting Fading West, they’re just protesting Switchfoot in general as well as their audience for listening to and buying their rock and roll albums-something they deem as a sin against God.
Second of all, I’m pretty sure there’s no one out there that “worships” Switchfoot. To call out the Tumblr fan base and say this is pretty low-Switchfoot conversations on this website are brought about by the respect and admiration fans have for Jon, Tim, Chad, Jerome, and Drew. From what I’ve seen, most people on Tumblr that talk about Switchfoot will tell you in a heartbeat that their music has strongly influenced or even saved their life when things were tough. Not to mention that a lot of those same people are religious and would probably be a little offended by the notion that they worship anything other than God.
To say that we “worship” Switchfoot is a little ridiculous. We are enthusiastic and excited about their music as well as the life lessons the guys have taught us. Any other fandom-music, television, or otherwise-does the same thing. Fandoms are driven by passion, and maybe that passion is misunderstood to people outside of the fandom, but I just don’t think it’s right to condemn people for appreciating and loving something and to especially target a group of people who happen to have a blog on a specific website.
I don’t mean to rant (although I know I have), I just get upset when people paint the Switchfoot fandom in a negative light when it’s full of such passionate, wonderful, kind people.
